Råbjerg Mile is a migrating coastal dune in North Jutland, about 20–25 minutes east of Rubjerg Knude. At low tide
The beach is at its widest and the sand flats are exposed, good for a shore walk and for seeing the cliff base. The walk from the car park to the lighthouse crosses the higher dunes, so it is not affected by the tide.
At high tide
The sea pushes further up the beach and can break right at the base of the eroding cliffs. Keep your distance from the cliff face and never shelter beneath it.
Best timing
A falling or low tide often brings the calmest, widest shore and the clearest light on the sand. Pair it with a wind and rain check from the weather panel above.
Coastal safety
- •Sneaker waves can surge higher than the prevailing tide — never turn your back on the sea near the waterline.
- •Stay well clear of the cliff base, especially near high tide and after storms when erosion is most active.
- •Soft sand and the wet foreshore tire you quickly; allow extra time for the return walk.
- •Tide times shift daily — check a current local tide table (for example the Danish Meteorological Institute) before you go.
What is Råbjerg Mile
Råbjerg Mile is a 1 km-wide migrating dune, roughly 40 metres high, that moves several metres a year. It began as a coastal dune and now sits inland, a striking 'desert' landscape surrounded by heath and forest.
Walking the dune
A marked trail leads from the parking area to the dune, about 1 km across heath and through a plantation. The final approach is open sand, so sturdy shoes and wind protection help.
Free & open
Like Rubjerg Knude, Råbjerg Mile has no ticket or fence; access is free and the area is open all year. Facilities are limited, so plan supplies around nearby towns.
Getting there
Råbjerg Mile is reached by car from the coastal road between Frederikshavn and Skagen, with a dedicated parking area. It is roughly 20–25 minutes from Rubjerg Knude, so the two are easy to combine in a half day.
